First and foremost, let me state that I am in no way, shape or form being compensated for this post. I am offering up my opinion purely based on my experience.\u00a0 My experience with what you ask?\u00a0 My experience with DirecTV and how they made\u00a0watching The Open Championship a better experience for me.<\/p>\n
As I’ve stated before, I love to play\u00a0golf, but\u00a0I’m not a huge fan of watching it on TV.\u00a0 Truthfully, I find it a bit dull.\u00a0 So when I got a message on my TV from DirecTV regarding watching\u00a0The Open Championship on multiple channels, I didn’t pay it much mind.\u00a0 I figured it’s just a couple more channels that I won’t be watching.\u00a0 But\u00a0early on Saturday afternoon, something told me to take a look anyway…and I’m glad I did.\u00a0 When I tuned to the channel in the message and began to watch, I was presented with another menu option.\u00a0 When I hit the red button on\u00a0my remote to bring up the additional options, the fun began.<\/p>\n
Option #1 – “The Top 5 leaderboard”\u00a0– A nice, quick reference when you just want to know who’s on top and what’s their score,\u00a0without waiting for 156 names to scroll across the bottom of the screen.\u00a0 But, if you want to see the entire leaderboard while scrolling through it at your own pace, well that’s available at…<\/p>\n
Option #2 – “Leaderboard”\u00a0– You don’t have to watch the bottom of the screen for the leaderboard and worry about missing\u00a0the name you may be looking for.\u00a0 Also, if it’s moving a little too quickly, you can use the menu\u00a0to scroll at your own pace.<\/p>\n
Option #3 – “Tune To” – This gave me\u00a0five further options:<\/p>\n
a.\u00a0 “The Open Mix” – This splits my TV to show four separate screens – ESPN, Holes 1 & 18, Holes 7\/8\/9 and the International\u00a0View.\u00a0 More on this below.<\/p>\n
b. \u00a0“ESPN” – This channel would show an alternate feed from ESPN (which was showing the regular broadcast) even when they were on a commercial.<\/p>\n
c. “Holes 1 and 18” – Just as it sounds.\u00a0 This channel would rotate between holes 1 and 18.\u00a0 So rather than bounce all around the course,\u00a0you see every player that passes through both holes.<\/p>\n
d.\u00a0“Holes 7\/8\/9” – See above, but for\u00a0holes 7\/8\/9 instead.<\/p>\n
e. “International View” – Not exactly sure where this feed was from, but I’m going to make the pretty obvious guess that it would be Scotland.\u00a0 If\u00a0not, then somewhere in the U.K. at least.\u00a0 Anyway, it was another alternate feed from the other two ESPN’s.<\/p>\n
Option #4 – “Scoreguide” – This\u00a0is an option that shows up on all of the sports channels on DirecTV, and it showed up here as well.\u00a0 This option gives you the scores from the rest\u00a0of the sports world as well as the option to switch over to that channel if the game is on one of the channels you get.\u00a0 It’s a nice feature for keeping up on scores\u00a0from other sports or other games when you don’t want to change the game you’re watching.<\/p>\n
I’ve had three different TV providers, and so far I’m\u00a0pretty high\u00a0on DirecTV.\u00a0 It’s great if you’re a sports fan.\u00a0 For me, I’m a big football fan and love NFL Sunday Ticket.\u00a0 How can you beat having the option to see every game?!\u00a0 And being able to plug-in your fantasy\u00a0league matchup is the cherry on-top!\u00a0 But this experience with golf as well has opened up a new option for me.<\/p>\n
Now, when the PGA Championship rolls around in a few weeks, I’ll know that\u00a0watching golf on TV will be that much better than it was before.\u00a0 However, this in no way trumps Sunday Ticket.\u00a0 Any final round still takes a backseat to the NFL.\u00a0 Sorry.<\/p>\n
