We here at GolfStinks always joke about some of the characters on the golf course, but because we tend to play together, times are few and far between that we actually get paired up with them.\u00a0 But this past weekend, I went out for a nine-hole round with a fellow stinky golfer.\u00a0 And sure enough, we\u00a0joined up\u00a0for\u00a0a few holes with\u00a0Mr. Grumpy “Rules-Guru” Golfer.\u00a0 Though it lasted only three holes, it was quite the experience.<\/p>\n
We start out playing only as a twosome, and that continued through six holes before we caught up with the\u00a0twosome in front of us.\u00a0 Under a bit of pressure from the group behind us, we\u00a0ask to join them, although it did seem as if they were not too happy about\u00a0our request.\u00a0 What we were in store for was quite the surprise.<\/p>\n
It started on the seventh hole when we joined\u00a0an older gentleman\u00a0playing with\u00a0his daughter.\u00a0 This particular gentleman seemed annoyed that we were trying to join him, and had no interest at all in even speaking to us.\u00a0 This was a complete\u00a0one-eighty from the friendly nature of most golfers we encounter.\u00a0\u00a0It wasn’t until\u00a0walking off the seventh green that he even uttered \u00a0a word to us, and\u00a0even that seemed at the behest of his daughter.<\/p>\n
The eight hole continued the same until, while on the eighth green, Mr. Grumpypants scolded my playing partner when he attempted to\u00a0tend the pin.\u00a0 I didn’t notice the situation as I was walking to my ball, but I heard him mutter something about a two-stroke penalty and knowing the rules of golf.\u00a0 At this point, I wanted to (but didn’t)\u00a0tell this guy “Look, this\u00a0is a $20 nine-hole course.\u00a0 No one out here right now is a stickler for the rules…only you.\u00a0 Further, everyone else out\u00a0on this course is here for fun…except you.”<\/p>\n
The ninth hole continued and ended without a word.\u00a0 \u00a0The only time we were acknowledged was when my playing partner found the grumps ball under a tree.\u00a0 Barely a “thank you wave” was given.\u00a0 My\u00a0partner tried to make a polite joke about moving the ball out from under the tree…which of course went\u00a0without even a smirk.\u00a0 And in true gentleman golfer fashion, after Captain\u00a0Crabby\u00a0sank his last putt, he hurried away without a hand-shake, a word, tip of his hat or any acknowledgement whatsoever.\u00a0 At least his daughter was polite enough to, almost apologetically,\u00a0wish us a good day before she went to meet him.<\/p>\n
