{"id":4178,"date":"2014-06-09T07:00:50","date_gmt":"2014-06-09T11:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/golfstinks.com\/blog\/?p=4178"},"modified":"2016-03-19T01:19:07","modified_gmt":"2016-03-19T05:19:07","slug":"do-you-find-golf-relaxing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/golfstinks.com\/blog\/2014\/06\/do-you-find-golf-relaxing.html","title":{"rendered":"Do You Find Golf Relaxing?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/golfstinks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/golf-fishing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4182\" src=\"http:\/\/golfstinks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/golf-fishing.jpg\" alt=\"golf-fishing\" width=\"247\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a>I work with a guy who is one of those people\u00a0that just can&#8217;t ever sit still or relax.\u00a0 He&#8217;s always doing something.\u00a0 He wakes up when it&#8217;s still dark outside to go to the gym, probably works a 9 1\/2 to 10 hour day on average, goes home to do some kind of household project because he can&#8217;t not change things, and when he&#8217;s not doing that he&#8217;s teaching a spin class at his gym.\u00a0 On the weekend, it&#8217;s more of the same.\u00a0 Go, go, go &#8211; it never ends.\u00a0\u00a0He doesn&#8217;t realize it, but he almost always looks stressed &#8211; like if he doesn&#8217;t do something, things will be amiss.\u00a0 I recently asked him if he ever just\u00a0sleeps\u00a0in or if he ever\u00a0simply takes the time to grab a beer, sit down and do nothing for a little while.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ve ever seen a look of such confusion before that moment.<\/p>\n<p>In one of the most recent conversations, a couple of us brought up\u00a0some plans to go fishing over the weekend.\u00a0 Again, my co-worker&#8230;totally lost.\u00a0 He says &#8220;I don&#8217;t understand how\u00a0you guys\u00a0can go fishing.\u00a0 You just sit there and&#8230;&#8221; and he imitates casting a line and reeling it in.\u00a0 We all respond with &#8220;Exactly&#8221; or &#8220;Yeah, pretty much.&#8221;\u00a0 But the main response was\u00a0&#8220;It&#8217;s relaxing.\u00a0 Just sitting by the water, maybe having a beer and just relaxing&#8230;not having to think about a thing.&#8221;\u00a0 Still&#8230;that doesn&#8217;t register with him.\u00a0 He responds with &#8220;That and golf.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We all proceed to tell him that he needs to learn how to slow down and relax once in a while or he&#8217;s going to have a heart attack in a year.\u00a0 He then attempts to justify it to us by explaining why he doesn&#8217;t like fishing or golf.\u00a0 He says of golf,\u00a0he doesn&#8217;t like the sport because\u00a0he has no control over the ball.\u00a0 Once\u00a0he hits the ball,\u00a0he has no control over what happens.\u00a0 He can&#8217;t control the wind, the conditions\u00a0of the course or where the ball is going to go once he hits it.\u00a0 I try to explain that the better you get, the better you can control\u00a0where the ball goes.\u00a0 I\u00a0also tell him that the conditions of the course as well as the weather are just part of the game &#8211; they can&#8217;t be controlled so you work with them.\u00a0 I also try to explain that a good part of the reason I play is because I&#8217;m spending time with friends, having conversation and doing something while we&#8217;re hanging out.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not just the sport itself.\u00a0\u00a0My score is secondary.<\/p>\n<p>He goes on to tell me that he can&#8217;t understand how the results are secondary.\u00a0 When he bikes or runs, he challenges himself to beat his last time, so he tries to beat himself.\u00a0 That&#8217;s relaxing to him.\u00a0 I explain how that&#8217;s the same dumb logic that golfers use to try to explain why their game is so unique\u00a0when, in actuality, it can be applied to any sport.\u00a0 I also explain to him that when you are riding your bike or running, pushing yourself to beat a time, it is not relaxing.\u00a0 It&#8217;s competition.\u00a0 No one considers competition\u00a0to be relaxing.\u00a0 In the end,\u00a0for him it comes down to control.\u00a0 For a person who tries to play the &#8220;I&#8217;m not a control freak&#8221; card&#8230;we finally got him to admit that he, in fact, is.<\/p>\n<p>So am I wrong here?\u00a0 Or is he?\u00a0 Both of us?\u00a0 Neither?\u00a0 My opinion is that golf is completely relaxing!\u00a0 That is, as long as you&#8217;re not taking\u00a0it too seriously.\u00a0 But I get the idea that he wouldn&#8217;t know how to\u00a0NOT take it seriously because he doesn&#8217;t know how to just relax.\u00a0 I believe that unless you are playing professionally, or at least competitively, you need to take\u00a0it down a notch both for the good of your sanity as well as the good of the game.\u00a0 But, more importantly, some of us need to find a way to relax in general &#8211;
