There’s no doubt little league encourages a love of baseball – could it work for golf?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

My kids sports schedules\u00a0are out of control.\u00a0 I have no idea how we ever get anything done outside of run all over God’s creation to get them where they need to be when they need to be there.\u00a0 My oldest plays baseball – practice is everyday after school with at least two games during the week and every other Saturday.\u00a0 The middle child plays lacrosse – practices are three nights a week with a game or two on the weekends.\u00a0 The youngest does gymnastics, which is by far the easiest schedule-wise\u00a0– her practices are twice a week\u00a0with a meet once a month.\u00a0 These schedules\u00a0require either my wife or I to leave work early on a pretty regular basis.\u00a0 It’s like they don’t remember that most parents work.\u00a0 But I don’t mind.\u00a0 It’s what the kids want, so we make it happen.\u00a0 As a matter of fact, if one more sport was included, I could live with it.\u00a0 But that sport would have to be golf.<\/p>\n

I’ve wondered for years why little league golf hasn’t really caught on.\u00a0 I certainly understand there\u00a0are several roadblocks which stand in the way – cost, a course in town, getting times on the course, etc…\u00a0\u00a0Lets just say the conditions are not favorable.\u00a0 But with the state in which the game stands – fewer younger people taking it up – courses may want to start considering rethinking their current practices for the benefit of the future of the game.<\/p>\n

We all know the game ain’t cheap.\u00a0 So there’s one roadblock right off the bat.\u00a0 It’s not just the equipment – equipment isn’t cheap\u00a0in many other sports either.\u00a0 Trust me…see the first paragraph.\u00a0 But further standing in the way\u00a0are greens fees and range time.\u00a0 Neither are inexpensive.\u00a0 This is somewhere where courses could step\u00a0up and help out a golf little league organization.\u00a0 I’ve yet to play a twilight round at any of my local courses and see the range crowded.\u00a0 Letting a little league golf team use the range and putting green free, or at a\u00a0handsomely discounted rate, would certainly help.<\/p>\n

The rounds themselves are a different story.\u00a0 Obviously this can’t be done at no charge.\u00a0 However, discounting the fees for the local little league teams\u00a0could only benefit the courses\u00a0in the future.\u00a0 Problem is, obviously not every town has a golf course.\u00a0 But if there is one\u00a0in somewhat local driving distance, then towns can combine with surrounding towns to create their little leagues.\u00a0 This would also make the tournaments conveniently at one course as well.<\/p>\n

Of course, always in the way\u00a0is the cost\u00a0to\u00a0simply get involved in the game.\u00a0\u00a0Polo shirts, golf shoes, clubs, balls, etc.., it’s never ending.\u00a0 Some costs are unavoidable.\u00a0 But again, the courses can certainly help out with many of these – discounts in the golf shop, especially on used equipment, would certainly help.<\/p>\n

In the log run, donating some range time\u00a0and equipment, discounts, and a little cooperation from courses themselves would certainly help to get younger kids introduced to, and involved in, the game.\u00a0 And, in all likelihood, it would also create future customers, maybe even members.\u00a0 A little help for a future golfer in the beginning could pay off down the road, both for the course and the game itself.\u00a0 It’s something to consider.<\/p>\n
