{"id":3187,"date":"2013-11-18T07:00:55","date_gmt":"2013-11-18T12:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/golfstinks.com\/blog\/?p=3187"},"modified":"2014-10-14T12:21:30","modified_gmt":"2014-10-14T16:21:30","slug":"wildlife-on-the-golf-course","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/golfstinks.com\/blog\/2013\/11\/wildlife-on-the-golf-course.html","title":{"rendered":"Wildlife On The Golf Course"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_4955\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4955\" style=\"width: 535px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/golfstinks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/HiltonHead003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4955 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/golfstinks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/HiltonHead003-e1412800979868.jpg\" alt=\"Gators sunbathing in the fairway on Hilton Head, SC\" width=\"535\" height=\"363\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4955\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gators sunbathing just off the fairway on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina (<i>Photo by <a href=\"http:\/\/golfstinks.com\/blog\/gregdandrea\">Greg D&#8217;Andrea<\/a><\/i>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I&#8217;m an animal lover.\u00a0\u00a0And I don&#8217;t mean\u00a0just your everyday domesticated house pets, but all animals and wildlife.\u00a0 I can stare at the groundhog family outside my office window for who knows how long.\u00a0 Well, long enough to get nothing accomplished for a significant amount of time.\u00a0 But I can&#8217;t help myself, I just find wildlife interesting.\u00a0 This is another thing that gets me excited about going golfing &#8211;\u00a0spending some time\u00a0out in nature.<\/p>\n<p>When\u00a0I have the opportunity to play a course that&#8217;s far away from a city and carved out\u00a0of the woods, besides just the beautiful New England countryside, the chance to see a good amount\u00a0of the local wildlife is there as well.\u00a0\u00a0This comes to mind thanks to\u00a0a quick nine-hole round I played this past Sunday morning with one of my kids.\u00a0 On one hole, we had a deer standing in the middle of the fairway that seemed to be in no\u00a0hurry to leave once we pulled our cart up.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t until I continued to pull the cart up, getting to within about 40 yards, before it ran up\u00a0a hill and out of sight.\u00a0 On the\u00a0green of the very next hole, a red-tailed hawk flew within 15 feet of us as we putted out.<\/p>\n<p>Now deer and birds of prey may be relatively common, but it&#8217;s a bit uncommon for a deer to let you\u00a0get that close.\u00a0 On one occasion, while playing in an old golf league, we had two deer working their way down a fairway toward\u00a0my foursome standing on the green.\u00a0 They didn&#8217;t turn away until one of us teed off.\u00a0 Or how about the occasional fox?\u00a0 There&#8217;s been a couple of times where a fox has run across a neighboring fairway.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s been\u00a0in our travels that we&#8217;ve come across some other creatures we won&#8217;t normally find here in CT.\u00a0 For instance, stinky golfer Greg tells a story of playing a course in the southwest where one of the employees ventured into the desert\u00a0area\u00a0bordering the rough to collect some balls.\u00a0 Greg noticed the guy was wearing a pair of boots.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Well, when he came out of the brush, several\u00a0stingers from the tails of scorpions were sticking out of the guy&#8217;s boots.\u00a0 Lesson&#8230;when playing a desert course, if your ball goes into the brush, leave it there.<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite experiences though was playing down in Hilton Head, SC.\u00a0 This was my first\u00a0time\u00a0sharing the course with alligators.\u00a0 People had told us if we leave them alone, then they&#8217;ll leave\u00a0us alone.\u00a0 This was certainly the case, but that didn&#8217;t make it any\u00a0easier when my approach landed only fifteen feet away from one!<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, the wildlife\u00a0is just another part of the all-around experience of the sport that keeps me coming back.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve\u00a0seen\u00a0deer and all the other furry woodland creatures.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve chipped on while being only fifteen feet away from an alligator.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve caught a few snakes.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve even seen someone hit a duck from about 200 yards!\u00a0 As long as I never end up on one of those &#8220;When Animals Attack&#8221;
