Really?\u00a0 Is that all it takes to become an internet sensation?\u00a0 Is this all I would have to do to go from a relative nobody to getting a story on ESPN?\u00a0 I’ve\u00a0flipped the bird to many people on many occasions, so why not me?\u00a0\u00a0Oooohhh…I have to do it on a golf course, during a tournament, I guess.\u00a0 D.H. Lee must have just beaten me\u00a0to the punch.<\/p>\n
So it finally happened in golf.\u00a0 A pro finally had enough of a heckler in the gallery and sent a message.\u00a0 And I’m not talking one of those flipping out about a camera click messages.\u00a0 I’m talking the “We’re #1!” message.\u00a0 The old one-gun salute.\u00a0\u00a0We’ve seen it in other sports – remember Jack McDowell?\u00a0 We’ve even seen baseball and basketball players run up into the\u00a0crowd to go after fans (Ron Artest\u00a0and Chad Kreuter come to mind).\u00a0 But\u00a0this is new to golf.\u00a0 If a camera doesn’t click or someone doesn’t whisper during a swing, then there is almost no interaction with the gallery, either positively or negatively, whatsoever.\u00a0 So what is the PGA to do with this?\u00a0 Do they suspend him?\u00a0 Do they fine him?\u00a0 You know the PGA can’t have any of their players disrespecting their fans like that.\u00a0 Or…can they?<\/p>\n
I can’t be the only one who thinks golf could use a bad boy, right?\u00a0 And I don’t mean a bad boy off-the-course such as a Tiger Woods or John Daly.\u00a0 I mean an on-the-course\u00a0bad guy that you want to hate, but at the same time you kind of root for because he’s different than every other boring face in the crowd.\u00a0 Now I also don’t mean the PGA should encourage this kind of behavior, because it can get old fast, especially if too many players\u00a0are getting in on it.\u00a0 But if they take a guy like Lee, maybe pull him to the side and tell him something to the effect of:<\/p>\n
“Pssst…hey, D.H.\u00a0 That little\u00a0act you pulled last weekend\u00a0sure brought us a little more attention than usual.\u00a0 I’m not telling you to do it again.\u00a0 But…I’m also not telling\u00a0you not\u00a0<\/em>to do it again either.\u00a0 Maybe not the finger next time, but a little something else, ya know?\u00a0 I promise we’ll make it worth your while.”<\/p>\n Want to get people to tune into an event that normally doesn’t quite get the ratings?\u00a0 Want to make people interested in the highlights from a smaller tournament that normally just kind of slips under the radar?\u00a0 D.H.
