{"id":2357,"date":"2013-06-10T07:00:06","date_gmt":"2013-06-10T11:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/golfstinks.com\/blog\/?p=2357"},"modified":"2013-06-10T00:14:19","modified_gmt":"2013-06-10T04:14:19","slug":"why-do-golfers-take-their-rules-so-seriously","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/golfstinks.com\/blog\/2013\/06\/why-do-golfers-take-their-rules-so-seriously.html","title":{"rendered":"Why Do Golfers Take Their Rules So Seriously?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/kbuuk.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/11\/reading_rules.png?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"272\" \/>It&#8217;s strange but, it seems we here at Golfstinks have spent an inordinate amount of time over the past\u00a0week or so\u00a0going on about the rules of the game.\u00a0 The reason it&#8217;s funny is because all of us\u00a0here\u00a0aren&#8217;t really sticklers for the rules.\u00a0 For the most part, we all go by the old &#8220;play it as it lies&#8221; rule.\u00a0 And if we can&#8217;t, we&#8217;re not all about pulling out the\u00a0book.\u00a0 We&#8217;re not going back to the tee to hit another ball.\u00a0 We&#8217;re not marking off exactly two club lengths.\u00a0 We simply drop the ball in a reasonable spot, take a\u00a0stroke if necessary, and move it along.<\/p>\n<p>But we understand that some golfers are\u00a0a bit nutty over the rules.\u00a0\u00a0Many\u00a0golfers\u00a0carry that book with them in their bag.\u00a0 Heck, some of these golfers practically have it memorized!\u00a0 But my question is, why so serious?\u00a0 What is it about\u00a0golf that makes its players take it, as well as the rules, so seriously?\u00a0 Like every game they play is a major with a million dollars on the line.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few guys out on their local\u00a0course with their buddies is pretty much the equivalent of a few guys out on a local basketball court, right?\u00a0 Or some guys playing\u00a0in a local softball league.\u00a0 Well, I&#8217;ve done all three, and no\u00a0players are as passionate about the rules as golfers.\u00a0 Now,\u00a0I said &#8220;passionate,&#8221; but that can easily be replaced with &#8220;annoying.&#8221;\u00a0 I&#8217;ve seen golfers pull out their rule books on the local course.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve seen players hold up the group behind them by following the rules to the point where every I is dotted and every T is crossed.\u00a0 I&#8217;d like to see someone head down to a local basketball court and try to call an intentional foul&#8230;or just about any foul for that matter.\u00a0 In any pickup game I&#8217;ve ever played, I have never seen a technical foul called.\u00a0 But some golfers?\u00a0 Come on now.\u00a0 Same out on a\u00a0baseball or softball field.\u00a0 Anyone ever see a balk called during a\u00a0game?\u00a0 But I&#8217;ve seen golfers pull that damn book out for anything questionable.<\/p>\n<p>So what is it?\u00a0 There&#8217;s nothing wrong, obviously, with playing by the rules.
