Are women few and far between on the golf course?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In the spirit of Mother’s Day, I began looking into some statistics regarding female golfers.\u00a0 I’m not really sure how I connected the two though.\u00a0 My mother doesn’t golf.\u00a0 Neither do my sisters.<\/p>\n

Although growing up, I remember my mother owning a set of clubs, but I never actually saw her use them.\u00a0 Much like my father, I think she gave the game a try only to find that it wasn’t for her.\u00a0\u00a0But nevertheless, I somehow connected Mother’s Day to golf anyway.<\/p>\n

Did you know, depending upon where you look and what stats you find, it’s reported that anywhere between 20-25% of amateur golfers are women?\u00a0 So one out of every four or five golfers out on the course\u00a0are female?\u00a0 I don’t know about you, but those numbers seem a bit inflated to me.\u00a0 I don’t know why they would be inflated because I don’t think there’s any reason to inflate them.\u00a0 But either way, it seems a little high to me.<\/p>\n

See, the thing is, I use my own experiences to compare to these numbers.\u00a0 On\u00a0the small scale of my personal experience, I have played golf exactly one time so far this season.\u00a0 And in that one round, I saw one female golfer out on the course.\u00a0 She was in a threesome, two groups behind me.\u00a0 Certainly not anywhere near the 20-25% claimed.<\/p>\n

But that’s only one round.\u00a0 So it’s not fair to judge off of that.\u00a0 But it seems like this situation occurs anywhere I play.\u00a0 It’s very rare that I see women out on the golf course anywhere or anytime I\u00a0play.\u00a0 I can count on one hand how many times I’ve been paired up with women when\u00a0I’ve shown up to the course with less than a foursome.\u00a0 As a matter of fact, I can think of only three times off the top of my head – all three times I showed up\u00a0as a twosome, and\u00a0two of those three we were paired up with a husband and wife.\u00a0 Only once were we paired up with\u00a0two women.<\/p>\n

What’s my point?\u00a0 I have no idea.\u00a0 It’s\u00a0just a stat I found to seem inflated for some reason.\u00a0 As mentioned, none of the women in my family are golfers, and I have no female friends who have done any more than try the sport once or twice and never took it any further.<\/p>\n

But I guess\u00a0now that I’ve seen it and used my\u00a0golf experiences\u00a0for comparison, it does dishearten me a bit.\u00a0 What I mean is,\u00a0one of the great things about golf is that it’s a sport that can be played pretty much equally by men and women.\u00a0 Sure, for the most part, men hit the ball farther.\u00a0 But that’s only one facet of the game, and certainly not always an important one.\u00a0 Otherwise, there isn’t a whole lot of difference between male and female golfers.\u00a0 There’s still a technique and\u00a0a certain level of discipline and judgment required to play the game –\u00a0and those things have nothing to do with physical strength or how far you can hit the ball.<\/p>\n

I, for one, would like to see more women out on the golf course.\u00a0 I would like to see the 20-25% as stated\u00a0out\u00a0there.\u00a0 Heck, I’d like it to be\u00a0higher!\u00a0 Why not?\u00a0 As\u00a0I stated earlier,\u00a0this sport has little to do with physical strength and much more to do with things that make the playing field much more level between men and women.\u00a0 So I think the real issue here is, why is it that women only represent 20-25% of golfers and not closer to 50%?\u00a0 Maybe that’s something I should look further into…<\/p>\n
