So a buddy of mine just got engaged this past weekend.\u00a0 After offering up my congratulations,\u00a0I proceeded to fill him in on the support group for men who have fallen victim to the engagement\/marriage syndrome.\u00a0 I let him know that we meet whenever necessary at local bars and golf courses.\u00a0 He doesn’t realize it right now, but he’ll be joining us there soon.<\/p>\n

It was only a joke, but it made me think about the reasons some of us are out on the links to begin with.\u00a0 Get away from the wife and kids for a few hours.\u00a0\u00a0Love of the game.\u00a0 An escape from a routine.\u00a0 The competition.\u00a0 The challenge.\u00a0 All of the above maybe?\u00a0 For me, it’s a little bit of all of these.\u00a0 But at the same time, it’s none of them.<\/p>\n

Some people just don’t get why I golf.\u00a0 I’m not talking about the people who are non-golfers and for one reason or another dislike the game.\u00a0 I’m talking about other golfers.\u00a0 Now\u00a0I don’t mean a guy who watched me play a round and then said to me “Dude, why are you even out here?\u00a0 You stink at this\u00a0game.”\u00a0 He’s right, I do stink at golf.\u00a0\u00a0But I’m talking about the guys who don’t understand that I’m only out on the course to hang out with my friends and do something we all enjoy.\u00a0 The actual game is secondary to me.<\/p>\n

The comment\u00a0I made earlier regarding the meetings at bars and golf courses is what made me think of this.\u00a0 But\u00a0to me,\u00a0playing golf with my friends, and heading to the bar with my friends, are pretty much interchangeable.\u00a0 And\u00a0I truly believe this mentality is what keeps me enjoying the sport (just as much as enjoying the bar).\u00a0 I’ll explain.<\/p>\n

Golf, to me, is a social activity.\u00a0 It’s not a competition to me.\u00a0 It’s not something at which\u00a0I need to excel.\u00a0 It’s not something at which\u00a0I expect to become great, nor do I really care if\u00a0I do.\u00a0 It’s something\u00a0I do with my friends as “hang-out time.”\u00a0\u00a0It’s about the equivalent of\u00a0going to a ball game together, to the\u00a0bar, the casino,\u00a0dinner or whatever.\u00a0 It’s just good quality time with people whom I don’t always get to spend enough.\u00a0 But that’s where I want to draw the line on golf.\u00a0 Any more, and golf would no longer be all about fun and socialization.<\/p>\n

The day I actually go out and pay for a lesson\u00a0will be\u00a0the day\u00a0that I have begun to take golf too seriously.\u00a0 And that, friends,\u00a0is where other golfers don’t understand why\u00a0I play.\u00a0 It is completely lost on them that I’m not concerned with getting better.\u00a0\u00a0But the attitude of other golfers is what gets lost on me!\u00a0 Why so many people have the urge to spend money with a pro to get better at a sport\u00a0at which they will never actually compete is way over my head.\u00a0\u00a0They ask me\u00a0“Don’t you want to get better?”\u00a0\u00a0But when I respond with “Don’t you ever want to play simply for\u00a0fun?” they look at me like I have three heads!\u00a0 Like the whole concept of playing for fun is completely foreign to them!\u00a0 Like it’s never even crossed their mind.<\/p>\n

I’ve said it several times before, but I’ll never get it.\u00a0 I didn’t\u00a0hire a hitting coach when I played softball. I didn’t\u00a0bring in a shooting instructor when\u00a0I played basketball.\u00a0 I don’t look to the The Mad Fisherman<\/a> when I’m having a slow day at the lake.\u00a0 So why\u00a0would\u00a0I pay a golf pro to help me with my swing?\u00a0 I do all of these things for the\u00a0same reason – fun.\u00a0 Not to try and\u00a0become a pro.\u00a0 Why should golf be any different?<\/p>\n

Now I’m not at all knocking people who take lessons.\u00a0 I understand that many people want to be better golfers.\u00a0 I understand that most people take the game much more seriously than I do.\u00a0 If that’s what you want to do, then by all means, do it!\u00a0 Take multiple lessons.\u00a0 Get\u00a0better.\u00a0 Become a great golfer!\u00a0 But what I am knocking is the people who have this over-bearing opinion that I NEED<\/em> to take a lesson.\u00a0 Or that golfers who are new to the game MUST<\/em> seek out a pro.\u00a0 It’s just foolish.\u00a0 Further, I’m of the opinion that this mentality is something that keeps new, younger players from taking up the game to begin with.\u00a0 People already see the game as expensive, uptight and\u00a0boring.\u00a0 Now, to add in that they have to pay a pro to help them?\u00a0 I’m sorry, but that is the wrong way to introduce players to the game.<\/p>\n

Think about someone introducing you to the game.\u00a0 They say to you “Come on, we’re going to go play golf.\u00a0 Let’s spend a bunch of money on your clubs, more on the accessories you need to play such as balls, tees and stuff like that.\u00a0 Then we have to buy you some shoes.\u00a0\u00a0Then we’ll go hire a pro to teach you how to swing.”\u00a0 Are you freakin’ kidding me?!\u00a0 If my friends introduced the game to me like that,\u00a0I wouldn’t be playing today.\u00a0 I would have said\u00a0“Thanks, but no thanks” and gone right back to playing basketball and softball.\u00a0 They play for fun, and that’s exactly how they introduced it to me.<\/p>\n

Now keep in mind, I love playing golf.\u00a0 Although\u00a0I play for fun,\u00a0I do try to play well while I’m out there.\u00a0 I might\u00a0as well, right?\u00a0 I’m not a student of the game.\u00a0\u00a0I don’t follow it professionally.\u00a0 I’m not concerned with becoming a great player.\u00a0 But don’t think just because you take lessons that you love the game any more than\u00a0I do.\u00a0 Maybe you do, maybe you don’t.\u00a0 But your desire to get better doesn’t measure anything.\u00a0 We just love the game for two different reasons.<\/p>\n

All I’m saying is before you encourage people, especially players new to the game, to spend the money on lessons with pros, find out why they are\u00a0out on\u00a0the course playing golf to begin with.\u00a0\u00a0You may think you’re being helpful.\u00a0 But what you may see as helpful and necessary, they may see as a complete turn-off.\u00a0 I\u00a0almost never give advice to anyone about their game.\u00a0 But if\u00a0I was to\u00a0do so, the only advice\u00a0I would ever actually give is…<\/p>\n
