Have you ever golfed with that guy who hits a terrible shot, or several terrible shots, and gets absolutely furious at himself?\u00a0 Worse yet, is that same guy a terrible golfer?\u00a0 I play with that guy all the time.\u00a0 Stinky Golfer Tom<\/a>, seems to have a mental breakdown just about every round.<\/p>\n

Now Tom has a few versions of a mental breakdown.\u00a0 First, there’s the profanity-laced tirade that goes something like this – Tom hammers a ball with his driver.\u00a0 Then, almost like it’s on a string, the ball slices into the neighboring fairway.\u00a0 “F***!!\u00a0 F***!!\u00a0 F***!!\u00a0 Always right!!\u00a0 Always F***ing right!!”<\/p>\n

Then there’s the club slam.\u00a0 That normally comes from the rough.\u00a0 It’s\u00a0exactly as it sounds.\u00a0 He hits the ball, something bad happens, and it’s followed by an almost earth-shaking thud, thud, thud…like Godzilla is bounding his way down the fairway.\u00a0\u00a0He never throws the club, just slams it into the ground like\u00a0he’s hammering a railroad spike.<\/p>\n

But third, and maybe the funniest, is\u00a0the silent anger.\u00a0 A point comes along where he just gives up on himself.\u00a0 He’s playing so terrible, that he just picks the ball up and wanders to the next hole.\u00a0 It’s especially comical when, like two rounds ago, he does it on the first hole!<\/p>\n

As funny as these episodes are for the the rest of us, I\u00a0wonder if they’re justified.\u00a0 What\u00a0I mean is, ever since I’ve\u00a0been golfing, Tom, for the most-part, has been\u00a0a triple-digit golfer\u00a0with the occasional round in the 90’s.\u00a0 So does he, or golfers like him, have the “right” to do this?\u00a0 Should they get this angry?\u00a0 Are they good enough that they should be angry for screwing up?<\/p>\n

Me, I don’t get angry on the course.\u00a0 Sure, I’ll let out a little reminder to myself such as “I stink” or\u00a0“I suck at this game.”\u00a0 But that’s about it.\u00a0 See, I’m not a good golfer to begin with.\u00a0 I know I’m not and I don’t expect that, all of a sudden, I’m going to somehow become a\u00a0scratch golfer.\u00a0 So why would\u00a0I get so angry when\u00a0I\u00a0hit a bad shot?\u00a0 I have accepted the\u00a0mentality that I’m not good enough to get mad.\u00a0 And better yet, I’m not sure I want to get better for that reason.\u00a0 If I get mad at myself for playing poorly, then I’ve begun taking it too serious…and I don’t want that to happen.<\/p>\n

Someone once mentioned to me that they have a buddy that gets angry at himself at every mistake he makes.\u00a0 But he doesn’t take lessons,\u00a0has never taken a lesson and just isn’t a very good player.\u00a0 So what is he so mad about?\u00a0 On the other hand, the guy who told me this story isn’t much better.\u00a0 However, he takes lessons and is trying to get better.\u00a0\u00a0But if he doesn’t…then he has something to be angry about.\u00a0 Now, is that good or bad for him?<\/p>\n

The problem for them, in my opinion,\u00a0is something\u00a0I have learned to accept.\u00a0 I\u00a0am perfectly comfortable with my level of play.\u00a0 I know I’m playing simply for the fun of it.\u00a0 Nothing more, nothing less.\u00a0 I’m not trying to become a scratch golfer.\u00a0 So I have no reason to get angry when\u00a0I play poorly.\u00a0 If I\u00a0hit a great shot, fantastic!\u00a0 If I hit a terrible shot, who cares?!\u00a0 It’s absolute golfing bliss!\u00a0 And to me, that’s the way it should be.<\/p>\n
